Jack Doherty has a doctorate in theology cum laude et cum laude scriptura from the Catholic Theology Faculty of the University of Freiburg, Germany. His dissertation, The Communication of the Christian Message in a Secularized Society, was published in Germany. At the University of Tübingen he studied under Professor Josef Ratzinger, now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. During his period of study and pastoral work in Germany, he managed to make two treacherous journeys behind the Iron Curtain and was secretly in contact with cardinals, bishops, and secret priests behind the Iron Curtain. He was in constant contact with Carol Cardinal Wojtyla, who became Pope John Paul II and who at that time begged him to send books. He has served as a Catholic priest in parishes in the United States, Germany, and with the United States Armed Forces, who helped him to organize a successful effort to smuggle in more than 57,000 religious, scripture-study, and theological books over a five-year period after he was banned from visiting communist countries.
The reactionary climate of the American Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council was not receptive to theologians like him, who ascribed to the German School of Theology’s more progressive views of Catholicism. As a result he changed professions and became licensed as a Healthcare Director/Administrator in hospitals and post-acute care facilities.
